How to Wear White After Labor Day

September 6, 2016

How to Wear White After Labor Day - Simply Be Work Look

Wearing white after Labor Day has always been one of those fashion rules that I never quite knew how to follow. A classic white button-down blouse, white jeans, etc.. I feel that I can make them work during any season. That being said, there are definitely a couple guidelines that I follow to keep an outfit from looking too summery.
First, start with some season-appropriate grounding pieces. For fall, I’m loving shades of mustard, crimson, navy and milk chocolate. If you’re planning on wearing white jeans, a burgundy or slate grey sweater would be a lovely pairing. I like to wear a dressy white blouse with colored pants, like the toffee ones I’m wearing here. Combining white with darker tones takes the look into cooler temperatures and away from the florals and brights of summer.
Next, I like to add in some metallic accents. A statement necklace or delicate layered pieces, a brooch or drop earrings, anything that basically you wouldn’t wear when it’s 100 degrees outside. I especially love a gold or jewel-toned brooch pinned on a blazer or coat (even on the lapel of a blouse).
Lastly, I recommend making sure the whole look is balanced. If you’re wearing a white bottom, shy away from a super light top, and vice versa. Wearing head-to-toe white is the quickest way to look like you belong at a pool party ;D Simple sheath or skater dresses can still work, but add another layer on top, like a navy blazer or camel trench coat.
I hope my tips were helpful on showing you how to wear white after Labor Day. After all, fashion rules were made to be broken!

One Vest, Three Ways – Working Class

June 8, 2016

One Vest, Three Ways - Working Class    Hi loves!
I hope everyone is doing excellently well. I wanted to mix it up today and try this sleeveless suede vest in not only a work look, but also as a layering piece. When putting together outfits that I would wear to work, the first thing I always consider is “how can I layer this?” In Southern California, it can jump from 60 degrees at 7 am to 102 around 2 pm. In my office, it can range from slightly chilly to comfortable to having to fan myself in the middle of the day!
I definitely have to think about having pieces I can remove or add on as the day goes on. I’ve made the mistake before of wearing a long-sleeved lightweight (or so I thought!) blouse and suffering through half of the day, so I try to stick with a pretty basic formula for dressing now. I almost always start with a slim basic tank or camisole, like these from Gap. They’re frequently on sale and I have about 10 total in white and black. Next, I’ll wear a sleeveless or short-sleeved top in either cotton or a sheer fabric for coverage, but also to stay cool. To top it off, I’ll grab anything from a barely there cardigan to a more substantial open sweater or blazer. I’m also a huge fan of the lightweight trench for integrating into your work wardrobe. I’ve linked several options below that I think would be great additions. Look for a lightweight material, preferably unlined, and also with roll-up sleeves to adjust between temperatures.
I wanted to keep this look pretty tonal, so I added some black heels that have a white stripe accent; grey, gold and black jewelry; a faux snakeskin work bag and a black suede knee-length skirt fro StitchFix that I’m just in love with right now.

Black & White Print Mixing

November 16, 2015

DFT University Grads72Something that even I will admit to falling in to is a work-wear rut. The same pieces keep making appearances day in and day out… You know the ones! Those black pants, worn-out flats and basic button-downs that are so uninspiring to wear (and to see others wear!) That is why, every now and then, I like to shock my work wardrobe with some decidedly non-basic pieces. This striped midi skirt, even if worn with a plain black top, is still going to bring some personality to your look. Same goes with the sheer windowpane print top- paired with skinny black pants and booties, some killer jewelry and even layered with a cardi and you’ve got a smart, work-appropriate, but not staid, look!
Accessories are also great for breaking up the monotony, and I always try to incorporate a piece with a couple colors to compliment a black & white ensemble.
