New Boots for Winter from Lugz

Hello, babes!
Happy almost Christmas! I know I’m not the only one to say how crazy it is that the year is almost over.. It feels like my birthday was last week, and that summer was a couple months ago. The truth is, we have almost 5 months of winter left in Chicago, and I started to prep for it way late in the game. A little further down, I’ll share more about my look and my cute new boots, but first, I wanted to chat about some quick and easy, (not to mention cheap!), ways to destress right now.

Tip 1-
Breathe. Wow, groundbreaking, I know, but taking some time to breathe deeply and slowly in and out through your nose has such a calming effect. It can help you focus and get centered, also release stress and squash nerves. I also like to use apps for guided breathing techniques. My favorite is called Insight Timer. It has lots of free options so you can find a voice that resonates with you, or use one of the self-guided sessions. I also LOVE listening to any of the water noises, (pouring rain, crashing waves, a mountain stream), when trying to get to sleep.

Tip 2-
Speaking of… As much of a challenge as it seems, SCHEDULE sleep! Set a cut-off time on your calendar, not just the intention, to actually carve out the time you need. Personally, I need 8-9 hours if I want to be fully functional the next day, so I add it in. That way, if an event might run late, or I start to get caught up with work, I have that reminder telling me I need to cut it short so I can be my most effective. If you’re worried about not getting it all done, manage your time to focus on what’s truly important and what needs to get done on a daily basis, the rest will get done in time.

Tip 3-
Perform random acts of kindness. And then keep them to yourself. I do a bit of an eye roll when people perform altruistic acts, then go on social media to blast it to their following/friends. Encouraging others to do good things is awesome, but it feels better, at least for me, to just know that I’ve done good things without the possibility of a virtual pat on the back from others. That being said, here are some things you can do! Pay for the coffee for the person behind you in line. Send hand-written cards. Get the door for someone. Compliment a stranger. Thank cashiers and servers for working on the holiday. Give someone that gift card you have that’s been gathering dust.

Tip 4-
Write it out. Keep a personal journal to take note of how you’re feeling. Regardless of if you ever re-read the notes, it always helps me to de-stress and get everything that’s on my mind down on paper.

Tip 5-
Turn on some music! I will ask Alexa to play something upbeat, or throw on one of my Spotify playlists of tried-and-true mood boosters, but I also like to branch out and try something I haven’t given much thought to. I never realized I might like a little country, until a friend turned me on to Maren Morris. I also think listening to classical music, which I hated as a child, is so soothing now! I’ll be in my kitchen, stressing over what to make for dinner and how I’m going to get all my Poshmark packages ready before the mailman comes… I ask Alexa to “play classical music” and for some reason, it has a calming effect and allows me to focus and get shit done!

Do you have any de-stressing tips to share? Leave them in the comments, let’s help each other out!

Cute snow boots for winter
Now, on to this super cozy outfit I’m wearing…
I’ll start from the bottom up! I had been looking for a new pair of winter boots I could wear everywhere, especially in inclement weather. Enter this versatile pair from Lugz at DSW! They’re called the Tambora and mine are in the shade Chocolate (which totally fits this rich color!), and they also come in a lighter brown and black. They’re lined with plush faux fur, which makes them very comfortable and warm, not to mention, I love the detailing at the fold-down collar.

I went pretty minimal, pairing them with jeans, a perfect white T, a shawl collared cardigan, layered necklaces, and my fuzziest glittens. Side note, I didn’t even know glittens (gloves & mittens) were a thing, but recently grabbed these at a pop-up in town. Can you tell I’m big on texture in the cold months?

What to do (and eat) in Asheville, NC

August 13, 2019

Hello, loves!
I can’t exactly claim to be an expert on the area, but I wanted to share what myself and my two besties got up to a little while ago. We took an extended weekend away with just a couple of set plans. We went with open minds to explore whatever popped up, and it turned out to be just what we needed! Enjoy my take on what to do (and eat) in Asheville, NC!

We started with an adventurous road trip from Raleigh, which took us about 5 hours with expected traffic. We took some realllllly windy, dark roads to get to our Airbnb. It wasn’t clearly marked and set far back off the main road up a gravel path. If you caught my stories, you’ll see it was actually quite scary! We settled in, shook off our nerves with a glass of wine, and went to sleep.

The next morning, and by that, I mean early afternoon because 3 girls and one bathroom has it’s drawbacks, we hit the ground running. Our first stop was the famed Biltmore Estate. I’m going to do my best to not overdo it on the imagery here, but it is truly stunning. See below for my tips on how to best experience it!

Outfit details:
Tank / Abound from Nordstrom Rack // Skirt / Costco find // Sandals / Target // Necklace / Gigimey // Bag / Amazon (my lifesaver, LOVE this bag so much for travel! I also have it in blush and considering getting it in other colors.)

Tips for visiting the Biltmore Estate:
Wear comfy shoes
I can’t stress this one enough! All you’re doing is walking, there is limited seating, and there are also a LOT of stairs and uneven surfaces to tackle.
Plan your day around the visit
If you want to visit the gardens, tour the house, and sneak off for a meal or wine tasting, budget 6-8 hours for the trip.
Check out Costco
We ended up buying tickets from a local Costco that included a two-day pass AND wine tasting for under $70. That’s less than anything else we found online by half.
Don’t plan more than two outfits to shoot in summer
If you’re a blogger, or just wanting to take some cute pics for the gram, don’t overestimate how many looks you can fit in. In summer, it is sweltering with limited shaded areas and no AC inside the house, your face will be melting off within 30 minutes, and there aren’t that many areas for changing. Knock your cute pics out right away and then just enjoy the grounds.

We had a brewery tour at New Belgium scheduled for 4:30, so we skipped the wine tasting the first day and headed downtown. I have to say that it was the MOST fun I’ve had on a tour, and that’s not (just) due to the amount of free beer that they give out. Our tour guide, Glen, was SO funny and informative. There’s also a slide that everyone goes down to get to the lower level, which I tried very unsuccessfully to take a video of 😆 We sampled about 5 different beers throughout the hour-and-change tour, and got a great history of the brand. It actually encouraged me to seek out New Belgium beers from now on. We grabbed another round and sat on their outdoor benches to people watch, which also included a lot of dogs and babies, and to have a good old-fashioned girl talk.

New Belgium Brewing Heart Wall New Belgium Brewing Brewery Tour New Belgium Fat Tire Tour Feeling understandably peckish after all that beer, we drove to downtown Asheville for dinner at Wicked Weed Brewpub, a popular eatery known for their beer and innovative menu. I had a very off-putting cold soup, followed by a tasty salad, and yes, more beer. I highly recommend the Lunatic, which is a Belgian Blonde. Very light and refreshing, and highly drinkable.. Are you sensing a theme?

Wicked Weed Brewing Lunatic Blonde The next morning, we slept in probably a bit later than we should have, and didn’t get on the road until almost noon. We drove up the incredibly scenic Blue Ridge Parkway, and did a little light hiking at the Nature Conservancy. I HIGHLY recommend making a stop here. The parking was a bit steep at $14, but admission is otherwise free. Wear comfy shoes and stretchy, breathable clothes, and DON’T FORGET BUG SPRAY! You’re basically walking around a forest, which is lovely, but that comes with lots of little flying critters. We took a couple of different paths, and found the trails to be well-marked (with distances at every post, which was super helpful). They also have quite luscious gardens, if you’d rather not “hike” and still take in some nature-like settings. We didn’t eat there, but their cafe was open and serving salads and sandwiches.

North Carolina Nature Conservancy North Carolina Nature Conservancy - What to do (and eat) in Asheville, NC North Carolina Nature Conservancy Weekend Guide North Carolina Nature Conservancy Weekend Guide North Carolina Nature Conservancy North Carolina Nature Conservancy North Carolina Nature ConservancyWe raced back to the AirBnB and got ready in record time, and headed back to the Biltmore for wine tasting. Unfortunately, as we were walking (ahem, running), up to the tasting area, they were JUST putting the closed sign up. So my tip there is to leave a half hour buffer for driving in to the Biltmore estate, finding parking, and walking to the tasting area. We ended up having one of the BEST meals at Cedric’s Tavern. Don’t let the name (in honor of the Biltmore family’s beloved dog), fool you. This place serves up some of the best fine dining-esque food I’ve ever had. We split the Spicy Buffalo Calamari, Beer & Bacon Almonds (a must-get!), the deviled eggs, and the pimento cheese. Our entrees were equally as good, but before this turns into a Yelp review, let me just say that I don’t think you can go to wrong here.

Biltmore Estate Cedric's Tavern Dinner - What to do (and eat) in Asheville, NCSadly, I only got videos of the food, but here was my look for the evening!

We went back downtown to do a bit of bar-hopping. A tip here is to use rideshare whenever possible if you’re staying nearby to downtown Asheville. Parking is no joke.. It’s expensive, difficult to come by, and you’re going to end up parking blocks away from your destination on a weekend. First nightlife stop was Pack’s Tavern. Not “clubby” in the slightest, more like a sports bar, but they had a frozen drink called the Pack’s Orange Crush. It’s basically frozen boozy Tang, and it’s just so good for no reason. Tread lightly with that one though 😆

We tried to go to a salsa club down the street called The Block, but not only was it packed (in my opinion, beyond capacity), but they were charging cover, and none of us are about that life. We made our way back to Wicked Weed and chatted up a table of guys in town for a bachelor party. Always fun! More Lunatic Blonde ale. Lastly, we headed to Foggy Mountain Brew Pub. I’m not going to sugarcoat, this is definitely a place where you end your evening. It’s a bit more divey than the other spots we visited, but the drinks were cheap and stiff, and it was a perfect way to end the evening.

The next morning was checkout, so we packed up and said goodbye to our little home away from home. I can’t lie, the bedroom I was staying in kind of grew on me throughout the stay. The walls were painted a soothing aqua, and I felt inspired to look in to painting the bedroom walls at my house the same shade. Our last meal of the visit was brunch at Rhubarb. MUST VISIT. One of the best meals I’ve had in a while, and I’m not even generally a fried chicken person.. But their Quan’s Chicken Biscuit had me singing a different tune. We split the herb-baked ricotta to start and I probably could have eaten JUST that for my meal. A tip is to not come starving, because it took our meal a good 40 minutes to come out on a busy Sunday morning, which I have gathered is the norm. I’d still go back, the food was that good.

Rhubarb Asheville Baked Ricotta Rhubarb Asheville Fried Chicken Sandwich
Places we’d like to try next time are Early Girl (breakfast spot), French Broad Chocolate Lounge, and White Duck Taco Shop.

How do you like these mini/weekend guides? Mark and I go to Columbus about every other month, and I’d love to do one to cover our must-do’s and must-eats. It would also be great to share an updated what to do (and eat) in Asheville, NC in a couple years after Mark and I visit together!

Hello, loves! Another month has passed, and I am excited to share my June IG outfit roundup! June marked the official beginning of summer and ACTUAL sunshine and warm nights. Reviewing Luxury Scent Box

June 5, 2019

This post is sponsored by Luxury Scent Box. All thoughts and opinions are authentically my own.

Reviewing Luxury Scent Box

Hello, loves!
I know I’m not the first one to say it, but I can’t believe it’s June already! Granted, it’s still raining here multiple times a week, but I am starting to get used to the spastic weather. Always dress in layers is the general rule of thumb!
Today, I’m reviewing Luxury Scent Box, a subscription service for fragrances. Y’all know I live for subscription boxes… Likely because I love the feeling of getting “presents” in the mail, but also because it allows me to always try new things. I’ve never used a service like this before, so I was excited to try it out.

A couple facts first about the brand. They’re based out of Orange County, CA. You can create a profile and have a certified fragrance specialist help you select your fragrances. Or you can do what I did and just pick the ones that sound interesting or pretty! They send out your fragrance in a reusable spray bottle and replace it monthly or quarterly, depending on your plan. Memberships are annual ($198) or month to month ($15-$18/month). With annual, you get a month free. No shipping charges and no tax. With each tube of fragrance, you’ll get about 30 days use. You can plan out which scents you get for the rest of the year if you like.

Reviewing Luxury Scent BoxNow for the good stuff! So navigating their site is pretty easy. You can scroll through all available fragrances, or narrow down by brand or specific notes that you like. I’m a big fan of Bergamot, Tuberose, and Oud, but honestly jump around a lot too. I immediately gravitated towards the Jean Paul Gaultier Classique, something I’d tried multiple times in my teen years, but not at all since. Such a classic, as the name would suggest! Next, I wanted a couple more unique scents that I’d never tried. I loved that they carry some of my favorite brands like Lollia and ToykoMilk. I decided on the Chloe Roses de Chloe and Flora Gorgeous Gardenia from Gucci. I guess I was on a designer scent kick!

Note you will only receive one fragrance at a time, but for testing purposes, I received all three of my selections. I must say that I’m really impressed at the quality of the spray bottles. Each scent was in a different colored tube (black satin, black and metallic gold, black and metallic pink). It took me longer than I’d care to admit that you twist the top away from the bottom to get the spray nozzle to appear on top. I’m blonde, what can I say?! At first I thought I wouldn’t be able to tell which fragrance is which, but the tubes easily pull out and are labeled.

Reviewing Luxury Scent Box Reviewing Luxury Scent BoxWhy I like this service… I LOVE testing out perfumes to find new favorites, and also to revisit past obsessions. I can not, however, afford to spend $130+ on a new bottle every time I feel like it. I adore that these are travel-friendly, the packaging is super sleek and low profile, and super easy to just grab and go, unlike some of my fragrances.. I’m looking at YOU, Versace Bright Crystal ?

So, is it worth it? Yes, I believe so. I think you’d end up spending less with this service and get to try new, exciting fragrances without having to spend money on large bottles or worrying about not using it all before the scent turns. My only critique is that I wish they had a 3 or 6 month shipping plan. That way you could have a couple different scents to rotate, and could cut down that carbon footprint just a bit from less shipping so frequently.

Tell me in the comments.. What is your favorite subscription service? Have you ever tried one for fragrance?
