Beauty Subscription Round-Up

January 29, 2017

Hello, loves!
Welcome to my Beauty Subscription Round-Up! One of my favorite things to see when I get home, other than my lovely fur babies, is a package at my front door! It’s a dangerous habit, I know, but there’s something that feels like Christmas, opening up a little gift just for me. This is one of the many reasons I started receiving the beauty subscriptions Julep, Ipsy and Birchbox.
For all services, you fill out a survey, providing them with your coloring, skintone, product preferences, etc. I usually say that I’m open to any kind of products, like perfume, highlighters, whatever they want to throw at me! Overall, I would say that Ipsy is more makeup-focused, and occasionally lower-end brands (NYX), while Birchbox offers an even mix of hair, skin, and color and is focused on more higher-end brands (the ones that they sell in their shop). Julep is a completely different animal, as all of the items in their sets are Julep brand. Their bread and butter is nail polish, and most of their recommended sets include at least one polish.
What really distinguishes these services is your level of involvement in what you’ll receive. Ipsy is a complete mystery each month. You can take a sneak peak at the preview email, highlighting what’s already been sent out, chosen for you based on your preferences, but at that point I just wait to see what arrives. With Birchbox, you can either choose a pre-selected themed box, one standout item (a lipstick, or hair serum, for instance), to add to 4 random samples, or let them pick out everything for you. I usually go with one of the curated boxes if it appeals to me, because I’m more comfortable knowing what I’ll be getting. Julep, on the other hand, shows you a few products in a collection that they’ve picked out based on your coloring, but let’s you swap out anything you don’t like, and choose from polishes, eyeliners, cream blush sticks and more to create your ideal set.
Now, let’s talk pricing!
Ipsy is $10 plus tax (free shipping) a month. Something to note about Ipsy is that they also include a themed makeup bag to house all of your samples. They’re usually really cute, although a little small to use as my everyday pouch. I’ll frequently use them for travel and have one for feminine products, hair styling aids, and lipgloss. Here’s what I’ve received over the last 6 months from Ipsy:

Beauty Subscription Round-UpA lot of makeup, some drugstore brands, mid-level brands, and those cute bags! Just a couple of skin and haircare products, but all told, definitely worth $65 for all of that loot!

Next up is Birchbox! I pay for BB yearly, to save a bit of money. Monthly, it’s $10; yearly, it’s $110, but they’re currently running a special for $99 with code “BESTYEAR99” If you use my link, you’ll get 50% off your first single box, making it only $5! I also keep the boxes from my sets if they have a pretty pattern on them, because I use them for storage. I love the collabs they do with brands like Rifle Paper, because they make the boxes seem collectable and they’re actually pretty sturdy. Here’s my past 6 months with Birchbox:

Beauty Subscription Round-UpA delightfully balanced mix of skincare, hair care and styling products, and cosmetics. I’ve found some of my holy grail skincare items through these boxes, and love having the travel-size approved hair items for whenever I fly. Another thing I love about Birchbox, is that they give you 10 Birchbox points (equal to one dollar to spend in their store), for every sample you review. That’s $5 each month that can go towards buying a full-sized product!

Last, but not least, is Julep! A single-month is $24.99 or you can prepay 3 months for $19.99 a month (my choice). You can use code “WITHLOVE” for your first box free, when signing up for a subscription. I’ve been a subscriber of Julep only for about 9 months, but in that time have amassed roughly 60 polishes. One of the downfalls of Julep is that they offer up extra items with every box, and I’m just a sucker for them! I wish I had more willpower in that respect, because I often end up adding on a bunch more items that I honestly could have done without. The quality of the polishes, lipsticks, and skincare items that I’ve tried has all been very good. That being said, I’m not one to spend $14 on nail polish (their estimated retail price), to begin with, so I sometimes feel that their values are a bit off, compared to what you get. Three polishes for $20 seems like a break-even for me, not a steal, so I will always swap out for a lip product or skincare item, if those options are available. No cute bags or boxes to be had with this choice. To see a roundup of my recent Julep boxes, check out my post here.

All in all, I’d rate the services 1) Birchbox, 2) Ipsy and 3) Julep. I may actually consider cancelling Julep soon, because a girl can only have so many nail polishes! I love the variety I get from Birchbox and the fun makeup I get to try out from Ipsy.

I’ve also tried the Allure Beauty Box, which was sent to me complimentary to try out and I thought it was a great value for the normal price. Jouer also had a seasonal offering of beauty and skincare items that I tried for two boxes, but half of the products were either broken or rancid and their customer service was SO lacking at getting to any kind of a solution. Not sure if they offer this anymore, which I’m not mad at, because it was awful.

I hope this comprehensive review has been helpful, if you were considering any of these plans! If you have any that you’ve tried and think I would enjoy, I’d love to hear about them!

Birchbox vs. Ipsy Roundup

August 27, 2015

I’m trying to stay more on top of these posts, so this round will only cover two months of Ipsy and Birchbox subscriptions. I have to say that I was impressed at the hair items I received, especially the Oribe sample. I love Oribe’s products but at an average cost of $25-40, the line isn’t exactly something I can swing for everyday use. It’s great to get to try out mini’s before I splurge for a full-size 😉

IMG_3835-0.jpgIpsy – July
First off, the bag is pretty cute. It’s a nice vivid ikat print.
Ofra Cosmetics Bliss eyeshadow/highlighter (I’ve been using this only as shadow, as it would be pretty dark to highlight with.)
Bare Republic Naturals Tinted Mineral Face Sunscreen Lotion
Eva-NYC Freshen Up Dry Shampoo
Be A Bombshell Cosmetics lip balm in French Kiss
Tarte Amazonian Clay Waterproof Bronzer

IMG_3836-0.jpgBirchbox
Love the Oribe sample, and this Stila liquid lipstick is quite pretty too.
Oribe Apres Beach Wave & Shine Spray
Juara Radiance Enzyme Scrub
theBalm Balm Desert bronzer
Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick
Supergoop Anti-Aging City Sunscreen Serum SPF 30
July’s winner… Tie! I really like the hair products in both sets, both offered up great bronzers and solid lip colors.

IMG_3834-0.jpgIpsy – August
Meh to the bag, it looks really cheap.
Marc Anthony Nourishing Argan Oil of Morocco Treatment
Pencil Me In Cosmetics Natural Eye Pencil in Boysenberry
Marsk Pro-Line eyeshadow brush
Hikari Cosmetics Salsa lip gloss
Skone Cosmetics Luxe Doubler Lip/Eye Pencil in Wine
OK, so I’m all for a multi-tasking beauty product, but I don’t think there is ANY way for a liner to be as effective on the eyes as it is on the lips (and vice versa!). The one included in this month’s bag has some questionable ingredients, so I’ll probably just toss it. Also, to get two burgundy/purple liners in the same month is a bit weird, not to mention redundant.

IMG_3833-0.jpgBirchbox
Woohoo for OPI nail polish minis! I’m also intrigued to try out the St. Tropez in-shower lotion. I have no idea how I’m going to wash off my hands without washing it off the rest of my body, I may have to do a review on that later haha!
OPI Nail Polish in Amore at the Grand Canal
Laqa & Co Cheeky Lip Tint in Humble Brag
St. Tropez Gradual Tan In Shower Lotion
Renee Furturer LISSEA Leave-In Smoothing Fluid
Dr. Brandt Microdermabrasion Skin Exfoliant
August’s winner… Birchbox! It wasn’t hard to beat the cheap bag with two oddly hued liners.

After making the statement to my co-workers that I would be dropping one of my beauty subscription service, I, um, didn’t. I feel like I get different things from both of them! I love trying new makeup shades, and Ipsy really gives me that opportunity. I’m also constantly on the lookout for new skin and haircare lines, and Birchbox is perfect for that. Oh well. The saga continues…

Birchbox vs Ipsy Roundup

July 2, 2015

Whew, this post has been a long time coming!
I’ve still been photographing my monthly loot from Birchbox & Ipsy to compare the two beauty subscription services. I’m actually contemplating not renewing my Birchbox subscription, just because I feel like a lot of things are repeating and I’m not getting the value that I do with Ipsy. I hope these comparisons help if you’ve been trying to decide which service to start up! 🙂

June

IMG_2270I first have to say that I really like the neoprene-like texture of this Ipsy bag!
Smashbox Photo Finish Primer
J. Cat Beauty Liptitude Hydrating Lip Stain – This stuff is SO vivid! I didn’t realize when it was in the tube how bright it would be, but it’s definitely not a casual-wearing lip color. Now 25% off with code “ipsy615”
Lavanila Laboratories Body Butter in Pure Vanilla
tre’StiQue Mini Shadow Crayon
IT Cosmetics Brow Powder Pencil

IMG_2278
So, double bonus this month, Birchbox sent to me TWO of the Hello Body Creams! Woohoo! I really do like the light, citrusy scent of these creams, so it’s awesome to be able to have a couple of these guys to take with my on trips.
Harvey Prince Hello Body Cream
Marcelle BB Cream Golden Glow – This stuff looked super orangey on me at first but then seemed to blend with my skin and cast this lovely tan, blemish-free glow.
Real Chemistry Luminous 3-Minute Peel – this product is rad!! Right after you start rubbing it around, little balls of dead skin (eww!) start forming and after a few minutes of massaging, you rinse clean and are left with smooth, fresh, baby soft skin.
Oribe Cote d’Azur Fragrance – I’ll admit.. I waited about two minutes after putting this gorgeous-smelling fragrance on before checking online for it’s price, only to discover that it was already sold out! I got added to the waitlist and about a week later, it was available and in my shopping cart!
Davines Hair & Body Wash

June’s winner – TIE! I’m obsessed with the Oribe fragrance, and love that I got a little extra in this month’s box. I also really like the lip stain from Ipsy and that scuba makeup bag.

May

IMG_2281
Ipsy – Also, a super cute canvas-y bag.
Urban Decay 24/7 Glide On Lip Pencil & High Color Glosses
Amie Morning Dew Matte Finish Moisturizer
BellaPierre Gel Eyeliner in Ebony
Briogeo Rosarco Milk Reparative Leave-In Conditioning Spray
Luxie Beauty Tapered Blending Eye Brush #205

IMG_2267
Birchbox
Juara Candlenut Body Crème
Cotz Flawless Complexion SPF 50
Number 4 Blow Dry Lotion
Marcelle Hydra C Energizing Hydrating Gel
W3ll People Expressionist Mascara – I HATED this mascara with a passion.. It’s dry, thin, barely noticeable on lashes, took 3 coats to actually be able to see anything and then it transferred to my lower lashline after only a couple hours.

May’s Winner – IPSY!
Great variation of products, and the offerings from Birchbox were just not exciting.

April

IMG_1571
Ipsy
LOVE this bag.. So fun and colorful and could even work for a date night clutch!
The Balm Nude Dude Eyeshadow – This color is phenomenal… I use it as a crease shade. It’s this shimmery muted plummy brown that can work as a neutral or, in heavier doses, as a great smoky eye shade.
Olive Natural Beauty The Olive Lip Balm – Moisturizing with a nice, soft scent.
Julie G Nail Color
KCO Colors Cream Lipstick – Unfortunately, this was sent to me damaged, but it’s a nice color that I continue to use with a lip brush.
Mica Beauty Eye Primer

IMG_1575
Birchbox
I’ve been a fan of Rifle Paper for a while, and was excited to receive this collaborative box. I’ll be holding on to it to store knick-knacks or office supplies.
Whish Shaving Cream – One of my least favorite products that I keep receiving from Birchbox. It irritates my skin and does nothing in the way of moisturizing when I shave.
Beaver Professional Hydro Nutritive Moisturizing Shampoo
Laqa & Co. Sheer Lip Lube Pencil – Love this minty-smelling, pretty pink shiny lip stain. It’s softening and such a fantastic color for summer.
Jouer Tint
Beaver Professional Hydro Nutritive Repairing Conditioner

April’s winner – TIE! Love the generous travel sizes of shampoo & conditioner in the Birchbox and the sheer lip tint is great, from Ipsy, that makeup bag and the eyeshadow are keepers!

March

IMG_0941
Birchbox
Laura Gellar Baked Blush & Brighten – I already had a larger version of this that I bought in a kit, and while I do enjoy the product, I think $31 is just a bit much to pay for blush.
Supergoop Advanced Anti-Aging Eye Cream – I’ve been using this product for about a week and do enjoy it. It’s not too thick or heavy, and I like the idea of adding SPF for even more protection around the eyes.
Whish Three Wishes Body Butter
Derma E Evenly Radiant Brightening Day Crème – Another product I was not a fan of. This cream left my skin sticky and like it had a coating over it. Not pleasant at all.
Dear Clark Volumizing Tonic – This is a great volumizing spray. I add it about halfway through my blow-dry to add some thickness and texture. It bulks up hair without making it crunchy.

IMG_0950
Ipsy
Boo Boo Cover Up in Medium – no clue why I was sent a cover-up in any shade that was not fair/pale/ivory, etc. I have no use for this because it’s at least 3-4 shades darker than I am.
Vintage by Jessica Liebeskind Illuminating Face Highlighter
NYX Butter Lipstick – this shade is a medium-dark purple shade that, with the right outfit, it actually pretty flattering!
Pur-lisse Gentle Soymilk Cleanser and Makeup Remover
Dr. Brandt Pores No More Anti-Aging Mattifying Lotion

March’s winner – Birchbox! This was almost a tie, as I wasn’t particularly impressed by either collection of products, but Birchbox edged out in front with that pretty highlighter.

February

IMG_0704
Ipsy
City Color Creamy Lip Stain – this stuff is gorgeous, really well-pigmented and it stays on for hours. It has a light vanilla scent too.
Emite Makeup Eyelash Curler – I don’t use curlers frequently and already have a couple floating around so I likely won’t get much use out of this.
Mitchell & Peach Fine Radiance Face Oil
ModelCo BLUSH Cheek Powder – this line is really nice as well, and the pinky shade is quite pretty on my fair skin.
EVA NYC Up All Night Volumizing Spray – this stuff really does work in volumizing hair but I did notice a bit of crunchiness/stiffness when using it.

IMG_0561
Birchbox
Sumita Color Contrast Eyeliner
TheBalm Read My Lips lipgloss in Pop – I really like the consistency of this gloss, but the tone is just a touch orange-y on me.
Not Soap, Radio Body Wash
Derma-E Anti-Wrinkle Vitamin A Glycolic Scrub
Fekkai Blowout Hair Refresher – This is a great between-shampoo hair refresher and the size is perfect for travel or a day trip when you need some touching up.

February’s winner – Ipsy! Love the cosmetics in this set, the blush and lip stain are very flattering on my complexion. The only thing I LOVED from the Birchbox was the hair refresher. I will definitely look for this after I run out.

So, all in all, Ipsy just slightly wins out over Birchbox, for me at least. Those more interested specifically in hair and skincare might find Birchbox the better option, while Ipsy is definitely more makeup-centric.

Birchbox vs Ipsy Roundup

January 23, 2015

I’ve mentioned on here before my love (ahem, addiction) of subscription services. Every now and again, I like to do a comparison of the items received in my monthly beauty deliveries from Ipsy and Birchbox. Over time, I’ve noticed that Ipsy is much more cosmetics-focused, while Birchbox is mostly centered around skincare. It works out though, because I end up with a perfect mix of both!

IMG_0038January’s Ipsy Bag
Hikari Cosmetics Mechanical Eye Liner
Pacifica Natural Mineral Coconut Eye Shadow in Ethereal
Probelle Into the Blue Nail Lacquer
Elizabeth Mott All Over Shadow Brush
La Fresh EcoBeauty Good Day. Day Moisturizer
I really like this bag! The flip side is cream-colored and it has an orange zipper.. Such a great color combo!

IMG_0032
January’s Birchbox
Tocca Cleopatra Crema de Mano
Manna Kadar Lip-Locked Priming Gloss Stain in All of You
MyChelle Dermaceuticals Advanced Argan Oil
It’s a 10 Miracle Leave-in Treatment
Balance Me Wonder Eye Cream

IMG_9218
December’s Ipsy Bag –
Tarte Deluxe Lights, Camera, Lashes mascara
Pixi by Petra Fairy Dust in Brightening Bare – this is a product I didn’t care for much.. I’ve already passed it on to a coworker to see if she likes it. I found the consistency to be a bit chalky and the color quite blah.
Nourish Organics Eye Cream
NYX Butter Lip Balm in Ladyfingers – this is very pigmented, I was surprised! It’s a great bright pink shade.
CoolWay Boost Repair Treatment

IMG_9227December’s Birchbox –
Dr. Jart+ Beauty Balm
Acure Sensitive Facial Cleanser
Benefit They’re Real Mascara
English Laundry Signature Fragrance
Toni & Guy Prep Heat Protection Mist – I want to give this spray another chance, but the first few tries left my hair a bit on the crunchy side.

IMG_9210
December’s Ipsy Bag
Be a Bombshell Eye Base in Submissive – I’ve tried using this twice as a base and it creases like no other! It’s a pretty color (bronze with shimmer) so I may try treating it like a cream shadow and wear it over another legit base.
Elizabeth Mott You’re So Fine Liquid Eyeliner in Black
J.Cat Beauty Wonder Lip Paint – this stuff is so concentrated! I’ve yet to try OCC’s lip tars but I can imagine that these are very similar.
Temptu S/B Highlighter in Pink Pearl
I wanted to love this bag but those wrinkles will just not come out, even after stuffing it with paper to help it get’s it’s shape back.

IMG_9223
November’s Birchbox
Juice Beauty Green Apple Peel Sensitive
Camille Beckman Platinume Gold Imperial Repair Hand Therapy
Make Dual Phase Eye Makeup Remover
Toni & Guy Classic Shine Gloss Serum
Laura Mericer Kohl Eye Pencil in Black Navy

I’ve got to admit that I look forward just a little bit more each month to those shiny pink packages from Ipsy.. Birchbox has them beat though when it comes to hair samples!
What beauty subscriptions do you look forward to each month?
😀
