Fashion Closet Must-Haves and Storage

August 3, 2015

After years and years (dare I say, decades? Cause then I feel really old haha!) of cultivating my current wardrobe, buying and selling all different types of fashion-related items, and a brief stint assisting a photographer on editorial shoots, I’ve come across several items that I consider must-haves for any well-stocked closet, and in case any fashion emergencies should arise. Some things are more specifically helpful during photo shoots, others are great just for keeping your closet in tip-top shape, and others are geared for comfort.

For photo shoots
Garment steamer – Mine is actually on loan from my boyfriend, and it’s infinitely easier to manage than an iron. I’ve been looking in to getting a portable version for shoots but it’s just the best for getting wrinkles out in a hurry while prepping everything up.
Portable fan – a MUST for temporarily cooling yourself off during a photo shoot in summer. It also will give your hair some movement for a close-up/headshot. I don’t recommend the ones with water reservoirs because they can mess up your makeup and cause your mascara to run.
A repair kit – You always want to have a small kit on hand, regardless of the situation, although this can particularly come in handy when travelling. This kit should contain safety pins (for fastening necklaces, etc), spare buttons of varying sizes, a needle and thread kit (which I usually grab at the dollar store), invisible/fashion tape (double-sided) – this stuff is great for fallen hems and low or gaping necklines; a lint roller, a small pair of scissors, and a suit brush. The brush I didn’t know I needed, but I’ve used it frequently to clean off shoes, pet hair and the like.

For maintenance/comfort
Fabreze Fabric Spray – I’m a fan of limiting the laundering of clothing until necessary. While this isn’t exactly the easiest feat in summer time, I find that if I’ve only worn an item for a few hours, a few spritzes of Fabreze makes them smell all nice and fresh again.
Fabric Shaver – This little guy is indispensable in autumn and winter, when it’s time to break out fuzzy scarves and nubby sweaters that have just gotten a bit too pilly. A little pass-by of this handy tool will remove all of those dreadful little balls that accumulate under arms and where necklaces rubbed.
Dr. Scholl’s everything- I use from this line the insoles, the moleskin-like tape to add to shoes with rough spots, the arch supports to tuck in to heels, and the no-rub balm if I can ever remember to use it, on my heels before a night out. I’ve also read a tip from Katie Maloney of Vanderpump Rules to wear a maxi pad inside your heels for long nights spent dancing and scheming.. I’ve yet to try this out, but it makes total sense!

When it comes to storage, I have a few invaluable pieces from IKEA that I highly recommend, not only for their functionality, but because the prices truly can’t be beat. This clothing rack, the Rigga, is a life saver when prepping for shoots, but even if I didn’t do what I do, I would still use it just for getting outfits figured out for work/weekend/trips, etc. The other is the Mulig, a clothing valet which is great for planning your outfit the night before. It’s got a tray for accessories and hooks for hanging clothing or your handbag.

For clutches, I’ve converted an old entertainment center of Mark’s that has 2 short shelves and one larger one, and it’s perfect because it has built-in bookends, so everything just stays put when I place it in there.

Moving on to my actual close configuration, I have my dresses and skirts hanging in our master walk-in closet, along with Mark’s things. In the closet room, which Mark has awesomely let me name our spare room, I have hanging my coats, blazers, tops and belts. Folded on the shelves above are jeans, sweaters, and cardigans, and I have two baskets with tights and rolled tank tops.

Sorry for the picture quality here, I do plan on video soon to show everything at the same time, so be on the lookout for it! But here you get the general idea of my set-up.
My scarves and hats are on a metal utility cart (also borrowed from the boyfriend), and shoes are in the closet, on a metal shoe rack, and on the floor wrapping around the guest bed and under anything that will have them! 😉

My jewelry is mostly on wooden hangers, hung across one of my closet doors, turned sideways. Not ideal, but it’s what I came up with in a pinch.

Lastly, I will say that a surprisingly useful tool I’ve found is the garment bags from Rent the Runway that come with my unlimited shipments! Garment bags can be purchased at a number of places, but these ones are lightweight and free, and so useful when traveling to a shoot or on vacation when I’ve got something fancy that I want to keep wrinkle-free and protected from the elements.

I hope this gave you some ideas on how to organize your closet, or some helpful additions to make getting dressed a little easier. I’d love to hear about your closet set-up or anything that I may have missed! 😀

LA Day Trip with OOTD

July 22, 2015

IMG_2215

It’s so awesome that from where I live, I can be in Big Bear, Palm Springs, Temecula, Santa Monica, or Los Angeles in about an hour. It allows for so many opportunities for day trips, exploring new parts of each city and tasting what they all have to offer.
For our last trip, Mark and I drove to LA to visit my friend Bonnie in North Hollywood, a little window-shopping in Beverly Hills, and then dinner and drinks at The Sayers Club.
My first outfit:
Palm tank – H&M
Rust skirt – H&M
Crisscross sandals – Forever 21
Crossbody leather bag – Botkier (rented)
Multicolor chain necklace – LA find
Long gold necklace – J.Crew – similar
Phone case – Kate Spade

IMG_2219
Our first stop was to visit my great friend, Bonnie, at Republic of Pie. She introduced to us to the amazingly decadent Triple Threat Pie Cake. This season, they’re baking up pumpkin, blackberry and apple. I. Die.

Thankfully, this was our first food of the day, so we actually were hungry by the time we reached our next destination, Esterel, in the Sofitel Hotel.

IMG_2222 IMG_2227 IMG_2229 IMG_2228
From the top.. Our table setting with assorted breads and parmesan crisps
Grass-fed skirt steak with veggies and corn puree
Yogurt-basil mousse with assorted strawberry preparations
Chocolate tart with raspberries

Food = mostly delicious. I did get some attitude from the staff after sending back my steak for tasting like charcoal and burny bits off the grill, but my new steak tasted much better, and then ending on that fantastically sweet note of the two desserts, I was pretty happy with our meal.

IMG_2254
A quick outfit change into this Erin Fetherston (rented) dress and azure kitten heels from Torrid, and I was ready for some purely speculative shopping at the Beverly Center.

IMG_3134
One more outfit change (too many this trip haha!), in to black skinny jeans, black wedge booties and this sequined BB Dakota tank, and we were on our way to The Sayers Club. I didn’t really know what to expect after checking out their website… Club? Restaurant? Bar? Lounge? And even after going, I’m a bit unclear, but it would be easiest to say that it’s a perfect mix of all of the above. You dine in the bar area, which also houses the kitchen, complete with a wood-fired oven. We chose the mushroom flatbread and ahi stack, along with a couple of mixed drinks, all of which were super tasty. Beyond this section, past the velvet rope, is a loungey club area with reeeeeally loud thumping music and singles looking to mingle – not exactly our scene ? After checking that out, we headed back home.

Another great weekend trip with my love.
Where do you like to go for a day trip?
😀

Rent the Runway Gowns

July 21, 2015

I recently received word from Rent the Runway that they wanted me to pick any two dresses off the site to enjoy and take some pictures.. And let me start by saying that it was not an easy task! RTR offers hundreds of gorgeous dresses ranging in formality from poolside hanging to Oscar party. I went with a couple of fancier choices, as I don’t often have the occasion to wear gowns, so why not!

Gown – Nha Khanh c/o Rent the Runway
D’orsay pumps – Sam Edelman
Clutch – vintage sunglass case (I added the crystals)
Crystal link bracelet – J. Crew – similar
Rings – LA finds

I love when my photographer tells me a joke in the middle of shooting 😛
Overall, this dress fit me perfectly, everywhere except the length! I would have been happier if it was maybe 2-3″ longer. I believe they do offer this dress in a longer length, and in that case, it would be extraordinary for a fancy holiday party.

Next up, was this gorgeous and surprisingly comfortable ruby red gown from Badgley Mischka. It flowed so beautifully as I walked and I almost didn’t want to take it off! I actually ended up wearing it out to dinner with the boyfriend after this shoot!

I will of course disclose that Rent the Runway sent these dresses to me to wear at no cost. I have been using their services for over a year now, and am a member of their Unlimited membership program. More on that here. Any time I’ve had any type of issue (from a dress that doesn’t fit to shipping delays), their customer service associates have always been incredible. Their selection is amazing, as I mentioned, and includes day-to-day and date night pieces, along with those drop-dead-gorgeous gowns.

Simply Stylist – Social Media

July 19, 2015

This post should have been completed long ago, my apologies for not getting it up sooner! I’ve been really enjoying the events being put on by Simply Stylist, ever since attending their Fashion & Beauty Conference earlier this year. Recently I attended the monthly session focusing on social media, hosted by the extremely personable, entertaining and knowledgeable Ashley Torres of Pursuit of Shoes. She touched on every major social channel and how to make the most of each, and got in depth on photo editing. I learned so much and have been implementing these tools every day since! After the session, the boyfriend and I headed to lunch at The Little Next Door, a cute little French place not too far from the Grove, then for shopping at the Santa Monica promenade, and finally, to the Grand Tasting at the Santa Monica Pier.

Near the end of her presentation, Ashley announced that we would be practicing the fine art of the #flatlay. I grabbed a couple of items from TopShop and arranged them with some of the things that I brought with me, to the keep the color palette simple. I didn’t win the contest for “best flatlay” but I was pretty happy with the outcome.

After the session, I met up with Mark and we headed over to The Little Next Door, a casual brasserie located on West Third. I can’t say many good things about the service, which at times ranged from lazy to just plain rude and insulting, HOWEVER, the food was incredible. I would go back for the food alone and just ask for a different server 😉

IMG_2124
Fresh, crusty bread with olive oil & balsamic, and a cup of carrot ginger soup. Yum.

IMG_2136
We had some time to kill after perusing the vendors on the Santa Monica Promenade, so we stopped in to the Ristorante al mar for a couple of cocktails. Not a bad view, right?

IMG_2138
After a quick outfit change, I was all ready for the Grand Tasting. Not my favorite dress that I’ve rented from Rent the Runway, but it was perfect for the warmer temperature.
Dress – Badgley Mischka (rented)
White sandals – Steve Madden
Tassel necklace – LA find

After the tasting, we still weren’t feeling satiated, so I hopped on my handy Yelp app and scouted out an awesome spot called Bacaro LA. It was the sweets that we were after, but will absolutely be back to explore the rest of their menu.

Presenting the brown butter cookie dough and homemade bread pudding. OMG yes.

Overall, it was a fantastic day with my love. Improving my craft, enjoying some fantastic food, and taking in the sights with my favorite person.
😀
