May Stitch Fix

June 12, 2016

Hi loves!
Oye, I’m getting really (and embarrassingly) behind on these! I’ll try my best to catch up, as I’ve already shot the looks for June! Le sigh. Anyway, on to the goodies! For my May Stitch Fix, I requested from my stylist a colorful crossbody bag, a bright pair of cropped bottoms (jeans or capris, etc.), a sheer blouse for work and a comfy pair of flats. I would say that she delivered on half of those requests.
You may have already seen the slouchy crossbody bag (from Octavia & Co.) in my hippie chic maxi dress post here…

May Stitchfix - Octavia Crossbody Bag May Stitchfix Crossbody BagI really love how vibrant this bag is. It looks great when paired with neutral tones, like I did here, but also could stand up to other brights or against a busy print. It has tons of interior space, as well as a flap that folds over and opens up to even more storage. At first, I was worried that it might be one of those bags that anything that you put inside, you can see it from the outside (such as a cell phone, notepad, etc.), but the shape stays pretty much the same unless you overload it. The strap is also long enough to wear as a shoulder bag or crossbody. Basically, I love this bag haha!
Crossbody bag – $48, purchased.

May StitchfixNext up was this satiny sleeveless split neck top. I LOVED the print and fabric and it was slightly shorter in the front than in the back, which would have been pretty flattering had it fit. It was perfect in the bust, but way too snug around the hips. It was returned due to fit issues. Top, $58, not purchased.

May StitchfixWhen I first pulled this blouse out of the box, I was a little iffy on the print. Then I realized how versatile it is! You could build an outfit around it, mixing it with pastels or neons, jeans, so many options! It was, again, too tight around my hips so it had to go back. Blouse, $48, not purchased.

May Stitchfix Dolce Vita SlidesThese Dolce Vita slides really aren’t my style but I thought I would try them on to see if I could make them work.. The answer to that would be no, haha! They made a hideous squeaky noise and literally flopped off my feet when I tried to walk in them. At the shocking price of $70, they went right back.

May StitchfixLastly, I received these suuuuuper vibrant cropped pants from Kut from the Kloth. They were reasonably priced at $58, which I think is fair for well-made pants. I can’t say they’re the most versatile bottoms I’ve ever owned, but they can pair with black, white, other jewel tones and fun prints, which is perfect for summer. Cropped pants, $58, purchased.

Overall, I adored the styles of almost everything I was sent, but the sizing was a bit off. It’s not totally my stylist’s fault, as I’ve put on a few pounds unexpectedly over the past few weeks. I’d like to think it’s because I’ve been working out more often and that I’m gaining muscle, that is the happy thought haha!

I’d love to know about any experiences you’ve had with Stitch Fix!
😀

One Vest, Three Ways – Pops of Color

June 6, 2016

One Vest, Three Ways - Pops of Color Hi loves!
I hope everyone is doing well. Today, I wanted to talk about something that’s near and dear to my heart and that is shopping local. I say it’s near and dear because I grew up in a house that was not only where my family lived, but it was also the workplace of my mother. She owned a gift basket business (still does) and nearly our entire first-story was dedicated to components for making these gift baskets and a little home office. Seeing her balance two teenage girls and the demand of hundreds of orders going out every month, each one customized, was something that I truly admire.
This is one of the many reasons I love supporting small businesses. I’ve seen the struggle that they go through to keep the doors open. They also have unique, hand-crafted, or limited quantity products that you can’t find anywhere else. One of the things that my mom was kind of famous for was for taste-testing every product that she put in her baskets. She took so much pride in what she was creating, she wanted to make sure that the items were fantastic, because they were a representation of her. With so many of the little shops and boutiques around me, I see the same attention to detail and you can tell that someone sat and chose each and every item they’re presenting. I also love that they try to support local designers and creators. When I walk in to a boutique and see a little jewelry line that I know that someone has put so much effort and soul in to, it warms my heart and makes me want to buy something cute that I’ll cherish, knowing I’ve helped that person keep on creating. Here are some of my favorite local boutiques I’d love for you to check out!

This look is my second in the series One Vest, Three Ways – Pops of Color! I wanted to make it very playful, and what better to add some fun to a look than with stripes and bright shades. All of the accessories that I added I got at an extreme discount… The Kendra Scott wristlet ($12) and Sole Society wedges ($23) were Nordstrom Rack finds, and the cuff from J.Crew Factory I picked up while in Florida for the astonishingly low price of $6! I got it in coral as well, but for some reason TSA grabbed it when they searched my bags! 🙁

One Vest, Three Ways – Neutrals

May 24, 2016

One Vest, Three Ways - NeutralsHello loves!
I thought it was about time to show again how I style one piece, three ways. I had been eyeing this sleeveless dove grey vest at BohoCheri for a while and it got me thinking of all of the different ways I could wear it. Casual with jeans and a tank was an obvious direction to go, so I decided to pair it with neutral touches for running around downtown. I also put together two other looks that I’ll be posting shortly. I love distinct pieces like this that can be dressed up or down, are pretty much seasonless an can even be worn to work. I would totally wear this over a slim-fitting LBD with some gorgeous gold bangles and strappy black sandals, or with a colorful button-down, black pants and nude open-toe heels. So many options!
Speaking of options, I’m running out of things to watch on Netflix, which I never thought would happen! Mark and I have recently gone through the new House of Cards, Daredevil, and Flaked. Flaked started off pretty darn slow but we enjoyed the little plot twists & turns. I have no idea how they’ll make a watchable second season though. I watched How to Get Away with Murder and Love by myself because Mark didn’t really care for them. HTGAWM was so riveting from episode one and I totally binge-watched it over the course of a couple weeks. When I watched the last scene of the last episode of season two, I literally gasped! I do absolutely enjoy Viola Davis’ performance (along with everyone else in the cast), but I think in the first couple of episodes her cockiness was a little annoying. Oh, yes! I’ve also been binging on Young & Hungry. It took me a couple of episodes to really get in to it, but I love the light-hearted quips that go down between Gabi and Sophia. The leading ladies are so funny, have crazy-but-relatable love lives, and I totally look forward to seeing their outfits on each episode. I wish I had Emily Osmet’s legs so I could rock some of those cute little dresses she wears! I think the 6″ stiletto booties she wears all the time are super impractical for a chef who lives in San Francisco, but hey, they look rad!

Which TV shows do you binge-watch? Any recommendations for me?

Cocoon Wrap and Lace-Up Bodysuit

May 7, 2016

Cocoon Wrap and Lace-Up BodysuitHello, loves!!
I was so excited to put this outfit together and had so much fun shooting it! I think one of the reasons it was enjoyable for me was because it made me think of all of things about the 90’s that I loved (and miss!)

My dress code in the 90’s, when I was very much still figuring out my style, was truly all over the place. I remember wearing glitter screen-printed baby t’s and super wide leg jeans almost every day. One of my favorite outfits, which still makes me cringe, was a metallic mesh t-shirt that flashed cobalt blue and silver, which I paired with either my silver JNCO hugely wide leg pants or a silver tulle ball skirt that I wore to a school dance. Who knows what the hell I was thinking, but when I was 14, those outfits were the sh!t! To me at least, haha! Back when Hot Topic was truly for goth & punk kids, not any of that mainstream pop-y, vampire drama paraphernalia, and Delia’s, Alloy, Moxie Girl and Girlfriends L.A. catalogs were torn through with reckless abandon searching for the latest in trendy gear. It’s crazy how so many of the trends I used to rock, like platform mules, lace-up shirts, and velvet chokers are totally on-trend right now. I won’t be bringing everything back, that’s for sure. While I think chokers are cute, now they give me a suffocating, choking (weird, right!?) feeling and I can’t stand them. I also feel like wide leg pants, on my frame, just don’t do me any favors.

My beauty M.O. in those years was all about the glitter gel. It was one of the first beauty items that I ever hoarded. I had glitter in all forms – gel for body and hair, body spray, creams and sticks for eyes, loose for mixing with lotion, and in every color and size you could imagine. I’m really glad that I toned that all way down, but I totally feel that hit of nostalgia whenever I do a toned-down glittery eye for a GNO. I think everything shiny was kind of a theme with me, and it’s funny how much I’ve stuck with that, just made it more refined and, dare I say, grown up!

What clothing trends make you nostalgic for the decade you grew up in?
