For our recent meeting at a local eatery for happy hour and project planning, I went for a look that was relaxed and breezy, which is pretty much a requirement now that the heat is really kicking in around southern California!

What to Wear to a Summer Wedding

May 28, 2015

Wedding season has finally arrived!
With the return of warmer weather, also comes the arrival of endless invites to nuptials of friends, family, and loved ones. After the questions of what to gift and where to stay, comes the biggie… WHAT DO I WEAR?
There are several things I like to take in to consideration when choosing the ideal ensemble for such an occasion, which I’ve elaborated on below 🙂

Formality – I’ve been to a more traditional formal wedding, where people wore gowns and tux’s, and most recently, a country chic casual wedding where the bride and groom wore cowboy boots. As with being an attendee at any event, it’s important to understand the formality of the gathering. The invitation is the first hint you’ll get, and can suggest which direction to go in. Some invitations are very helpful as to include suggestions on the level of fanciness, which is always appreciated.
If you have no hint of formality from the invite, the next things to consider are location and timing. A church setting would denote a more demure look might be appreciated, while a beach wedding cries out for airy fabrics and light colors. The same goes for timing… The earlier in the day, generally, the more casual the event. A day dress with flats could fly for an early afternoon wedding, while darker colors, heavier fabrics and heels often work best for evening services.

When you’re still not sure of formality, go for something middle of the road, such as these dresses above, but add something extra with the accessories.. A statement necklace or cocktail ring, and some great heels.

Patterns & Fabrics –
Light, airy fabrics work so well for most spring and summer weddings because they allow for movement when you’re walking and, more importantly, dancing! I prefer fabrics like silk or lace for this effect, and would say to avoid fabrics like linen which wrinkle so easily. You’ll be doing a lot of sitting, and butt creases are not attractive.

I’m actually a big fan of wearing prints to a wedding! Something lively and fun (floral prints are the frontrunner here!), but not too loud or vibrant. Animal prints to me are a no-go, as well as most stripes and polka dots, because they’re generally too distracting and no one wants that from their wedding guests!
In terms of colors, a bright shade can work if it’s a solid. I generally will try to find out what the wedding colors are in advance so I can have an idea of what the bridesmaids will be wearing, so as to not get confused with them and take away from their significance. White, cream, and all similar shades are, of course, off limits. A floral print dress with a white background can work, as long as the overall effect of the look is colorful.

This dress from Parker is pretty perfect.. It does have a white background, but the abstract floral print in gorgeous shades of purple and green is what comes through.

Length –  Length to me is the easiest part of getting dressed for a wedding! I prefer not to wear anything more than 2 inches above the knee, for reasons of comfort when sitting and to be respectful. If you want to show some skin, I like the idea of a hi-lo dress, sheer skirt with shorter slip underneath, or handkerchief hem.

Overall, the goal of wedding guest dressing is to show that you’ve put some effort in, but without taking attention away from the bride and the wedding party. And no matter what you choose to wear, make sure that you always arrive wearing a smile! It sounds cheesy, but a happy guest is what the bride & groom really want to see.
Side note: I’m such a big fan of renting dresses for big events, especially from Rent the Runway. I have the unlimited membership, which includes insurance for anything I rent… If someone spills their cocktail down the front of my dress, it’s covered. If someone steps on my hem while dancing and rips it, it’s covered and I can just send the dress back and not feel like I’m out a couple hundred dollars for a dress I may have only worn once anyway!
A few more options to consider..

Beauty Tag – 7 Deadly Sins

May 26, 2015

makeup-beauty-lipstick-make-up

I saw this tag recently on Charmed Christy’s blog, and thought it sounded really fun!

1. GREED: What is your most inexpensive beauty item? What is your most expensive?
Most inexpensive would be anything that I own from E.L.F…. so many $1 items, including my “holy grail” eye primer. Most expensive would be my Tom Ford Lipstick in Black Orchid. (I’m not counting any palettes or sets, just singular items). The lipstick was $50 and I hunted it down for months, before stumbling upon a few rogue tubes at Bloomingdales. The color worked on me so much better when I had dark hair, and is now reallllly extreme-looking with my strawberry blonde locks. I think it was the cult following appeal that got me searching for it.

2. WRATH: What beauty products do you have a love/hate relationship with?
My Victoria’s Secret lipglosses.. I love the shine and staying power of them. Sometimes, though, the scents can get quite overpowering, to the point of nausea, especially the banana and coconut ones. I just have to be in the mood for the very pungent scents, and I already have a love/hate relationship with bananas haha!

3. GLUTTONY: What are your most delicious beauty products?
Speaking of eating your beauty products! I really liked the lip glosses that Too Faced had in their Glamour Revolution palette from a while back, I would constantly find myself licking my lips. Also, the vanilla lip balm from Noya.. yum!

4. SLOTH: What beauty product do you neglect, due to laziness?
Night cream, most definitely. I buy them, then use the for one or two nights, and then promptly forget about them. I should also probably floss a bit more :/

5. PRIDE: What beauty product gives you the most self confidence?
It’s a tiny little thing, that maybe only makes the biggest difference to me, but I think I look like a different person with dark eyeliner on my waterline. It instantly gives me (in my mind), a come-hither smiz-ing gaze that makes me feel sexier and a bit mysterious. My favorite is the Le Crayon Kohl in Black Coffee from Lancôme).

6. LUST: What attributes do you find most attractive in the opposite sex?
If we’re talking physical – eyes and smile, of course. I like kind eyes and a big, comforting smile.

7. ENVY: What items would you most like to receive as a gift?
I love receiving makeup palettes.. Having so many new colors and formulas to try is like getting a whole bunch of gifts, rolled in to one! Also, I adore receiving bottles of perfume that have been on my wishlist for a while… Those are usually the pricey ones that I can’t rationalize spending a whole bunch of money on (like Not a Perfume or Miss Dior Blooming Bouquet).

Yay, I love doing quizzes!
I’d love to see your answers, please comment with them below!

Hunter Bell Maxi Wedding OOTD

May 24, 2015

Wedding season has begun!
I was so honored to be a guest at the wedding of Mark’s friends, Scott & Emily, this past weekend in the lovely city of Yorba Linda, CA. They went for a more causal country-chic vibe, which was so inviting. Mark and I had a fantastic time, and took a few shots along the way… Scroll all the way down to see how I styled my Hunter Bell maxi dress!

Those carrot cake cupcakes were to-die-for, and we were encouraged to take an extra one home with us… OK!

I loved the simple table décor and treat boxes. They took the edge off waiting for the taco bar to open. Such a great, crowd-pleasing idea to build your own tacos!
