Our Proposal Story

December 11, 2018

Columbus Franklin Conservatory Group Photo - Our Proposal Story

In case you’re wondering why it looks like we’re dressed for a tropical vacation in these shots, our proposal story takes place in early August ? Amidst all of the craziness of NYFW, moving, buying our first home, etc., in all honesty, I kind of just forgot to create this post! Horrible, I know, because our proposal story is really special to me, and I definitely want to share it with you. I hope you all enjoy!

In late July, Mark and I flew to Columbus, Ohio, to visit with his family. His sister and her husband flew in from Florida, and the rest of his immediate family was already in town. It had been our history to fly out to see everyone at least once a year, and it’s always a really fun time. During one of our first trips, we visited the Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, a nature museum of sorts. It features one of my favorite types of installations, a butterfly pavilion. You can ask Mark, I’m pretty obsessed with them!

Mark told me several days into our trip that his mom wanted everyone to dress up to take some family photos at the Conservatory to frame and present as a gift for his grandfather. I thought it was a lovely idea, but I hadn’t brought anything remotely fancy to wear! Thankfully, his mom had recently thrifted a gorgeous floral maxi dress that fit me like a dream!

We were joined by Mark’s best friend, Joe, as well as his mom’s friend who was our photographer for the day. We walked around the park for at least an hour, exploring the different scenes. They had everything from a desert to a forrest with waterfalls.. A little bit of every type of landscape. And of course, I didn’t think anything of people taking our picture the whole time!

We took this picture during our first trip there, years ago, and I knew coming back that I wanted to recreate this shot.

Franklin Conservatory - Our Proposal Story

Our Proposal Story - Franklin Conservatory Columbus, Ohio OK, so not exactly the same, because they had removed the benches, but it’s the same spot!

After we finished up inside, we stepped outside to the coy pond and bamboo garden. To this day, I still don’t know where those shots went.. We were all trying to figure out the best lighting and arrangement for group shots, and it was kind of a hilarious disaster. Maybe none of them turned out? After the group shots, the photographer said, OK, now, time for couple’s shots!

It was unbelievably hot and humid that day… And at the exact moment that I was turning to Mark to tell him that I felt like I was about to pass out, I looked over to see him getting down on one knee! I was pretty much in shock, and to be honest, didn’t hear much of what he said. I feel pretty bad about that bit, but I was in shock! I remember saying “YES, YES, OF COURSE!!” and then hugging him really hard. I then looked to his family who all had this sly look on their faces… They were in on it! I called them something cheeky, and they congratulated and hugged us. I love his family! It meant so much to me that we had them there to take part in this special moment. And I love how much planning he must have put in to it all!

I told his mom that I really did need to go inside and get some water. I grabbed a seat on a bench and took a moment to admire that shiny new piece of jewelry. It’s exactly what I asked Mark for.. an emerald cut, with stones that don’t go all the way around, a gold setting, it was perfection! Sometimes, I accuse him of not listening, but this was not one of those times, haha!

Our Proposal Story - emerald cut engagement ring gold

We stepped outside to the balcony, and tried to make our announcement phone calls, but were only able to get ahold of one out of the three people we tried! My papa was asleep, and my mom was in a meeting, as it turned out. My papa, when he woke up from his nap, unfortunately didn’t remember by the end of the conversation why we’d called, but I know he was so happy for us in that moment. My grandparents were probably the most persistent of our family members, encouraging us to get married. They’ve both since passed away, but I know their love will be felt all around us on our big day.

That’s our proposal story, folks!
I hope you enjoyed!
Now, feel free to send those wedding prep tips my way, I’m still definitely in need of them!

From SoCal to Chicagoland – Our Big Move

Our new house in Tinley Park, IL

Well, hello, there, babes!
I am currently writing this from the converted basement of our new home in the Chicago suburb of Tinley Park. And to answer the question I’m sure is on your mind right now, yes, it is quite chilly! I’m actually adjusting well to the weather, although if you check back in a couple months, I’ll probably be singing a different tune!

Packing and Saying Goodbye to Redlands, CA

From the packing to the transport, to the unloading, I wanted to share our journey of how we got to this place. ICYMI, Mark and I decided at the end of July that we wanted to start a new adventure by moving cross county from Redlands, CA to the Chicago area. He got a terrific job offer out here, and it was just too good to pass up. We were NEVER going to be able to afford a house in Southern California, and he was pretty unhappy at his old job, and it just made so much sense. He also had to start two weeks after accepting the position, so I was by myself during that time to begin packing up all of the non-essentials. I did have a great friend come by for a few hours to help me with the kitchen, and she had the idea to donate all of our extra food and supplies to a local shelter.

It’s not until you have to put all of your belongings into boxes that you truly see how much crap you own. O.M.G. After much research, we decided to go with U-Boxes from U-Haul to transport all of our belongings. No way we could have managed driving (and parking!) a semi with two dogs, and we also didn’t have a landing spot for our stuff once we got there, more on that later. The room calculator on their website said we’d need 3 boxes, but we went with 4 to be safe. We ended up having to call the night before in an attempt to get 2 more boxes, for a total of 6, and we still ended up having to leave a bunch of stuff that wouldn’t fit in our garage. So a head’s up, order more than you think you’ll need! They will take back any boxes you don’t use at no additional charge.

This is where things got a little sticky… I had hoped that some of my friends would come through to help me pack leading up to the days before we left. I posted on Facebook, sent out text messages, and nothing. After helping many friends move, I figured I would get the same offer back, but no. One even said that she had wanted to come over for drinks, but realized I was probably busy packing, so never mind. Still a little bitter about that, but what are you going to do? My mother, estranged sister, sister’s boyfriend, and my coworker Darla, (who was coming over to pick up a grill she’d bought from us), were the lifesavers that made it possible. We couldn’t fit my wooden bench, dining table and chairs, or coat rack in the boxes, so my mom took those. We couldn’t fit the washer and dryer, so we donated them to a family in need.

Moving from Redlands, CA to Chicago, ILRoad trip, woohoo!

Now, on to the fun stuff… Our epic road trip! It’s really damn expensive to ship cars and dogs, so we decided to make the most of it and drive! All-in, it was about 30 hours on the road, with stops in Moab, Denver, and Des Moines.
We left Redlands about two hours later than intended, and hit a bit of traffic on our way through Vegas. We stopped in Baker for food, which is where I chipped off a piece of my tooth while eating nachos from Taco Bell. Welcome to the land of no health insurance, as it’s still missing ? We almost fell asleep before getting to Moab, and had to pull over at a rest stop to nap for 20 minutes. Mark said he was seeing tracers, and I was having trouble keeping my head up. Not the safest conditions on those super dark and windy roads! We got to our cabin at about 1 AM, and knocked out hard.

The road to Moab, UTOur cabin in the mountains Tasty lox and bagels in Moab Arches National Park in Moab, UT Mark and the dogs in Moab, UT Arches National Park in Moab, Utah Gorgeous views in Moab
The next morning, we had a great breakfast in town, and then spent a couple of hours exploring Arches National Park. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and I’m so glad that Mark and I got to share it together. Another full day of driving and we ended up dining at this incredible little restaurant in Aspen, where I had the best chicken pot pie of my life. Seriously, I’m ruined for them now. Our hotel in Denver was at the Motel 6, and perhaps the only time I felt unsafe during our trip. We witnessed vagrants walking around the parking lot, and a couple of guys selling drugs right outside the check-in office.

It’s odd with knowing how dog-friendly Denver is supposed to be that we had SO much difficulty finding a place to eat the next morning. Mark grabbed a coffee and we got on the road, while I snacked on pretzels to hold me over. This day was kind of a blur, because TBH, the roads out there were SOOOOO boring. Once you’re out of the city and beyond the gorgeous mountains, it’s just hours of nothing on either side of the highway, and we’d only pull off for gas, grub, and puppy pee stops. We landed again pretty late in Des Moines, also at a Motel 6, but this one felt like a completely different experience than Denver. Clean, comfortable, and no shady characters in the parking lot.

Arriving in Chicago

The last day, we were both just over it. Mostly Mark, because he had to drive the entire stretch, as I don’t drive stick shift. Such a good guy. We crossed over a bridge, and all of a sudden, we were in Chicago! My excitement came flooding back, and everything was new and ready to be explored. Since we didn’t want to move twice (into and out of an apartment), we stayed with minimal belongings at the Red Roof Inn in Monee. It was mostly OK, except for a couple of raucous wedding parties, and a blood-curdling scream that woke us at 2 AM. For the price though, it actually was less expensive than renting a place.

We house-shopped for about a week, and saw some VERY rural properties, and some gorgeous, huge houses in communities close to the hotel, but far from the city. Feeling a little less than inspired, we spent a weekend going around to other neighborhoods to see if any of them would spark something. We wanted a small-town, but not too small-town, vibe, and a reasonable distance to Mark’s work and the city. I definitely still wanted to be able to attend events, and that just wouldn’t happen without a car living in Monee.

Frankfort was where we wanted to be initially, but the housing costs were astronomical! Tinley Park was right next door, infinitely charming, and with a vibrant downtown area. Once we found our house, we kind of just knew it. We put in an offer the night after viewing the property. Between the completely upgraded kitchen and the ginormous backyard, it had so many positives and a place we saw ourselves being comfortable and happy. I can’t wait to share how I’ve decorated it! Still a few weeks away from that point!!

So while I was sitting in the hotel room, planning our big move-in, I flashed back to the horrendous experience we had, trying to do it all by ourselves. I knew we would need professional help to get it all done in the two-day unloading window U-Haul was giving us. Hire-A-Helper had contacted me prior to our move, and I had thought, meh, we don’t need them. YES, WE DID. I used their site to browse by price all of the moving companies that were available on that day, and was able to schedule the week of our move-in. I loved that you could see reviews, the amount of times, if any, the company had been a no-show, and to read about multiple companies’ work ethics, all in the same place.

Mark, myself, and Mark’s dad, who had driven up from Columbus, spent about 6 hours unloading 2 of the boxes the night we got the keys and the next morning. I wanted to make sure that we didn’t go over the time window we paid for by doing some of it ourselves. After spending roughly $6,000 on gas, hotel stays, and the U-Boxes, we were pretty tapped out. I was able to secure Movemasters through Hire-A-Helper for the unloading, 2 movers for 2 hours for $224. They showed up about a half hour early, with 3 movers, and had the remaining boxes unloaded in under an hour and a half! They were all super professional, taking items with care to where we needed them to be, including all of our living room, my office and “closet room” down very steep stairs to the basement. Even after the items were all inside, they asked “What else can I do for you? Do you need anything else inside moved around?” I honestly think had we not touched anything in those other U-boxes, that they would have had everything unloaded in the time we allotted. I can’t recommend them highly enough.

mountains of stuff in the closet room the initial state of our living room So. Much. Stuff. These boxes are three deep!

If you’re moving soon, or know someone who is, feel free to use my link for Hire-A-Helper and receive $20 off your booking. They do all of the loading and unloading for you, and took a huge headache off of us settling in to our new place. We won’t be moving anytime soon, but I will definitely be working with them again when that time comes. Thanks for reading my post about From SoCal to Chicagoland – Our Big Move!

Blogger Brunch Event in San Diego

Hi, loves!
I hope everyone is having an amazing start to their October. The weather in Chicago has just now started to turn to rain and gloom, but that month of relative calm after we arrived was much appreciated to kind of ease us in! A little life update – We just heard back last night that they’re agreeing to our terms and we should have keys to our new house by the middle of this month! So exciting!!!!
Full disclosure, this brunch took place a couple of months ago, but we had an issue uploading the pictures and then moving, so it regrettably has taken me longer to get up than I anticipated. Apologies for the delay! Thankfully, the weather in the San Diego area is still about the same, so unlike where I am now, the patio at The Lot is still an amazing place to spend your Saturday morning and afternoon, followed up by watching a movie in one of their luxe theaters.
ICYMI, I also hosted a brunch in LA a couple months prior, that you can read all about here. I just enjoy so much being in the company of amazing creatives, sharing ideas and struggles, and kind of strengthening the bond in our community. Not to mention, gorgeous views, and tasty food and drinks! Those never hurt ? I chose Saturday because I think it’s the best day for brunch.. I’m not sure why people haven’t caught on yet, but when you brunch on Sunday, all of that champagne makes Monday all the more rough to handle. I like to brunch on Saturday to allow my body and mind a day of rest and to recharge before the new week begins.
I’ll get right in to it now with some fun shots of our meetup for Saturday blogger brunch & viewing at La Jolla’s The Lot!

Let me first talk about the vibe at The Lot in La Jolla. Think of the chicest outdoor patio, surrounded by planter boxes full of lush greens, immaculately clean tables and grounds, tons of nature-inspired elements, and just a sense of luxe calm, if that makes sense. It never got too noisy, but people were still having a great time and enjoying themselves. My kind of place, for sure!
90% of us ordered this fun cocktail which turned out to be the most vibrant shade of pink from the muddled blueberries. Our food arrived and out came the phones so we could be *basic* bloggers and take shots before digging in. I ordered the eggs Benedict, as I frequently do, and it was quite delicious. Just the right amount of cooked for my eggs (yolks still runny but no runny white), and the arugula gave a nice little peppery bite.
After we wrapped on our meal, we headed inside to watch Mamma Mia. Not only did I enjoy the movie immensely, (which was a surprise, because I generally despise musicals), but the leather reclining seats were SO luxurious and comfortable. I’m pretty sure Mark almost fell asleep a couple of times. Another perk of this theatre is that you can order drinks right from your seat! The servers are very inconspicuous so you don’t feel like you’re bothering your neighbor, and I was amazed at how quickly my drink was delivered after ordering.

All in all, another successful outing!

Now for a fun little outtake that I can’t stop laughing at!

NYFW Spring/Summer ’19 Final Days Recap

September 30, 2018

This post was created in partnership with Pink Blush, Kestan, The Haute Society & 50 Bowery, Bond 45, Aldo, Blank Slate Tea, Eliza J, Rent the Runway, and Gorjana. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own. It also contains affiliate links. Purchasing items through them may provide me with a small commission. Thank you for supporting the brands that support Dressed for Time.

Throwing you right back in to the action! Check out my earlier coverage of NYFW Spring/Summer ’19 here and here.

The morning following our GNO, I had my appointment with Glamsquad for a blowout that I had tried to push back later but 8:30. I ended up getting roughly 4 hours of sleep so that morning was less than fun for me waking up, but the blowout was SO worth it, because even in the rain, my curls lasted until that night! Side note, (and full disclosure as always, I will get a $25 credit as well), if you use my code ktaylor6816 when booking, then you get $25 off your service! My blowout with tip was $40 and for not leaving the house, that ain’t bad. Will definitely be considering them next Fashion Week as well.

After getting glam, most of my group headed to the She In pop-up sale. I didn’t have any experience with the brand, so I was pretty shocked to learn that they we’re offering 20% off the already pretty freaking low prices. I picked up a cape, bag, t-shirt, sunnies, and dress. We grabbed a quick cup of coffee (decaf mocha for me!), and headed down to the Haute Society influencer party, held at Hotel 50 Bowery. It was so lovely to meet some of my fave girls that I’ve been following for YEARS on Instagram, as well as be introduced to some amazing creatives that are definitely on my radar now.

OK, with the Brooklyn Bridge in the background?! Such a quaint little spot to dine or just sit and chat.
We actually had two shows confirmed to attend this day, but ended up un-comfirming because we just didn’t have it in us. I think I may have mentioned this in an earlier post, but DON’T overbook yourself! We certainly did and it took a toll mentally and physically. I never thought I’d be saying this, but there comes a time when you’re just like yeahhh.. I don’t really even want to deal with going to a fashion show right now. It’s just a LOT to attend, so make sure you’re pacing yourself throughout your trip.

After the event, we ubered back to the apartment and took a 30 minute cat nap before getting ready to dine at one of my fave NY spots, Bond 45. We visited them last season, and I’m always blown away by the level of service, not to mention the fantastic and authentic Italian food they delighted our tastebuds with.

But not before I tried to get a shot of myself in my lovely $14 H&M satin gown.. In the rain.. In the middle of traffic.

What you don’t see are the Fast Flats I was forced to wear because my blister-ridden feet were having none of the heels I tried to force them in to. Little did I know, the flats had multiple holes in them from previous wearings and they flooded with water as soon as we stepped out of the uber. I was literally drying them off under the table and trying to get my feet warm throughout dinner. Super classy, I know. Oh, and side note, and this is important to mention because it happened multiple times. We had to walk about 2 blocks because the uber driver convinced us that the restaurant was just up the street… No. He was lazy and didn’t want to drive through Times Square traffic so he let us off prematurely so we would have to walk two blocks in the rain. What a jerk!!!

On Monday, while everyone else went out to shoot or attend events, I actually managed to sleep in until about 9 o’clock. It was blissful being in a quiet apartment, just resting. It didn’t last though, because we had a very full afternoon to look forward to! Our first stop, Blank Slate Tea. So, I had been following their social account for a while and always wanted to visit the super girly (not to mention Insta-worthy) space to see it for myself. I definitely was not let down. The owner treated us, and everyone else in the restaurant, like royalty, walking around to check in on the patrons throughout the various stages of their meal. We were craving some veggies after all the heaviness, so we opted for salads and sandwiches, along with their dreamy lattes.

Next up, we all headed over to the Foley & Corinna open house collection preview. Can I just say that I wanted every single bag! Many of them were floral print or mustard, which are current obsessions, and a lot of them were in really interesting shapes.

A couple of the girls wanted to try to get that infamous shot at the Flatiron building, and I was totally game, so off we went in the pouring rain to try our luck!

The shopping bug was creeping up again, so several of us headed to the Rent the Runway sample sale. I’d previously visited their warehouse in Seacacus, New Jersey when it was still open to the public, and this was very similar. Well, except for the public dressing room, and the bags and jewelry being in less-than-stellar condition. I did find this cute Kate Spade fan style, along with 4 gowns that I probably didn’t need but felt I had to have. Following the hour+ of shopping, we headed to a little Mexican restaurant around the corner called Habenero Blues. Their queso and chips were TDF, but my enchiladas were very underwhelming, borderline gross, and really expensive for what they were.

Back to the apartment to knock out. Some of the girls had already left or were getting ready to leave, so there was kind of a sad vibe in the air. I started packing to be proactive, and actually had to buy a new rolling bag when we were out to fit all of my New York finds and gifts. Some of us said our goodbyes that night, due to some particularly gnarly early morning flight times.

As promised, I wanted to share some shots of our gorgeous apartment that we booked through Domio. They’re a new way to book luxury apartments and have some gorgeous listings that I keep browsing in New Orleans, San Diego, Austin, Nashville, Boston, and Honolulu. We stayed at one of their first New York properties, and even though I got my workout walking up and down three flights of stairs throughout the day, I definitely would return.

Well, my dears, that is a wrap!
I’d love to hear about your experience at NYFW, or why you’d like to attend next season!
