February Beauty Buys

February 28, 2015

I love that so many online retailers put their summer beauty sets on sale in the beginning of winter, because it’s no longer warm weather time in most parts of the world. I, however, live in Southern California where it’s summer about 8 months out of the year! I’d had this set from Sephora in my cart for months before I finally clicked “check-out.” The bronzers, bright lip colors and fun nail polishes are welcome in my makeup kit all the time, but it’s awesome that I can buy pretty little sets at great discounts and start using everything right away.

Benefit Cosmetics Bronze N Dandy cheek/lip set
MAC Pro Longwear lip pencil in More to Love
MAC Miley Cyrus Viva Glam lipstick
The lipliner and lipstick combo was recommended to me by a friend who works as a makeup artist for MAC. The liner is a great slightly darker, cooler base for the lipstick, and helps it stay on for hours upon hours.

Josie Maran 100% Light Argan Oil
Anastasia Brow Wiz in Caramel
Sephora Favorites Summer Stash Set including:

Urban Decay All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray
Deborah Lippman Glitter Nail Lacquer in Mermaid’s Dream
Josie Maran Coconut Watercolor Cheek Gelee in Pink Escape
NARS Laguna Bronzing Powder
Stila Magnificent Metal Foil Finish Eyeshadow in Metallic Pixie Dust
Make Up For Ever Aqua Eyes liner in Iridescent Navy Blue
Buxom Divine Goddess Luminizer
OCC Cosmetics Lip Tar in New Wave with brush
Marc Jacobs Lash Lifter Gel Definition Mascara in Blacquer

And then, all of the lovely skincare and fragrance samples Sephora sent to me!

A Glimpse Inside My Medicine Cabinet

February 13, 2015

Welcome to the sometimes clusterf*** that is my hair-centric medicine cabinet. I am lucky enough to live in a house with a spare bathroom. Or should I say my boyfriend is lucky, because I don’t think he’d appreciate my love of hair-care products taking over our shared space!… Regardless, it has taken some time to accumulate the products I think are best suited for my hair. I don’t have much brand loyalty, (except for maybe Bumble and Bumble), as most of my products come from all different types of stores and are purchased on a whim. I often find that the brand that makes the incredible hairspray also makes the super greasy serum, and so on, so I like to mix it up! I do love trying out new things, hence the abundant sample-sized section on the right, and my subscriptions to Ipsy and Birchbox certainly feed that addiction.

So I’ve tried my best to organize my products in order of use.. Such as “before blow-drying”, “while styling”, and “finishing touches.”
Starting at the top left, I have pre-blowdry serums and oils, some of which enhance curls or help keep hair straight, depending on the look I’m going for. Below that, are volumizing and prep sprays when blow-drying. Beneath those are pre-blowdrying protective mists and leave-in conditioners.
The middle section at the top holds styling and flyaway creams, sea salt sprays and finishing oils. Under those are texturizing powders and gels; on the bottom shelf is mousse, more root-boosting spray and beach-hair potions.
On the right side you’ll find mini sizes of hair masks and treatments, travel sizes of dry shampoo and dry conditioner, and finally, a rather small (if you ask me!) selection of hairspray. I’m partial to the sprays that also impart some shine, while holding a style, and I have one from Kenra that does the job perfectly, but it has to live underneath the sink because it is like 20″ tall! It is a bit pricey, but that bottle continues to last and last.

What is your ultimate hair-care brand? Or do you also like to mix and match from various makers?

Zoya Nail Polish Newbies and Collection

February 8, 2015

It ’twas another great mail day on Friday, when I received not only my newest Birchbox, but also these crazy-pretty new polishes from Zoya! Zoya is such a great brand for many reasons (they’re Big 5 free, reasonably priced, long wearing, always offering online deals), but my favorite thing about them is their amazing color selection! Multiple times throughout the season, they put out perfectly-timed collections of new colors and finishes, and nearly every time, I come across a color that I just have to have.. Below, is a picture I posted on Instagram of the newest additions, and then my entire Zoya collection (for now!)

Clockwise from the top –
Taylor
Chantal
Veronica
Anais
Severine
Charlotte (the last 3 are minis and part of a special release)
I also bought a HUGE refill container of nail polish remover from them because I love that too! The little pump bottle makes polish removal a breeze.

As you can probably tell, I’ve been leaning a bit more towards the neutrals and pinks/purples. I’m pretty happy with the collection the way it is, but will need to purchase another bottle of Sabrina soon… It’s the perfect milky non-stark white and I’ve just about gotten all the use I can out of the bottle I have.

What is your favorite nail polish brand?

😀

Eyes.Lips.Face

February 7, 2015

It’s been, oh, I don’t know, 4 years maybe since I ordered from ELF cosmetics’ website. Since their addition to Target stores, I’ve found myself just stopping by the aisle really quickly to pick up a replacement liquid eyeliner or eyelid primer, but not really pausing to investigate new products and shades. Then silly me remembered I had purchased a Groupon for ELF (that had long expired) and had yet to redeem it! It really did take me some effort to find enough goodies to make it to the free shipping minimum (that’s a lot of $3 lip products, mmkk?) but I’m pretty happy with my selections! I will try to get swatches up soon of the lip items and am also so happy to have a replacement for my old “dump” bag! I just love that they call it that, because you can just dump all of your makeup or whatever in it, but the one I had was from years ago and was covered in spilled loose eyeshadow and foundation, eek! This is much better 🙂

For the bargain price of $24 I received –
The infamous dump bag
a travel mirror
2 eyelid primers
a glitter primer (if I ever wear glitter on my lids again!)
2 lipsticks
lip exfoliator
gold smudge pot
3 tinted lip balms
blush palette

Not too shabby! I’m most excited for the wine-hued lipstick and that lip exfoliator.. My lips have been so dry recently!
What are your thoughts on bargain makeup brands like E.L.F.?
🙂
